The Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) is one of the six main organs of the United Nations, founded in 1945. It is dedicated to sustainable development and its three main pillars, which are economic, social and environmental. This year at MUN, delegates will focus on issues of reconstruction and sustainable development in post-conflict and developing areas.

When a country emerges from conflict, its infrastructure is destroyed, its institutions are faltering or non-existent, and its population is often in extremely precarious situations. Economic and social stability must therefore be restored in post-conflict areas. This should enable the population to resume normal life, but also prevent the area from relapsing into a new conflict. During the discussions, delegates should consider the trauma suffered by a large part of the population and the socio-economic and ethnic divisions that still divide the population, in order to bring political, economic, social and judicial stability and security. The investment of time, expert staff and peacekeepers, as well as the financing of reborn economies will be the focus of delegates' discussions.

Developing countries, in their race for growth, must not neglect the importance of seeking sustainability.

To achieve the UN's sustainable development goals (SDOs), global commitments to sustainable development in developing countries must therefore be mobilised. For this, as for everything else, there are three main areas to consider: social, economic and environmental. In a context of accelerating change, where jobs will change in nature due to the rise of technology, and population growth, particularly in Asia and Africa, the question of sustainable development becomes even more important: how can these changes be addressed in a sustainable way? To answer this complex question, delegates will have to take into account the multiple actors in modern globalised exchanges: governments, private investors, the R&D (Research and Development) sector, NGOs (Non Governmental Organisations), and the general population.
